Five Minutes for $5 million in Park Funding

Park Lovers, as you may know, APF and numerous other environmental organizations are fighting to increase city funding for parks. We've been told our collective voices have been heard at city hall, and now, in the last days before the final budget decisions are made, is the time for our last collective push.

If you think parks are underfunded, contact the Mayor and city council members THIS WEEKEND with this message:

I'm a voter, and I strongly and loudly support the GAP effort to raise an additional $4.75 million in funding for Austin PARD to care for our trees, trails, pools and parks.

If we don't fix the problems we have now, we can only expect them to get worse. Part of what makes Austin such a wonderful place to live is the abundance of parks and outdoor space and we need to take care of what we have before we lose it.

We need to make our voices heard between now and Monday! We can do this, Austin, together!

Fall Hancock Native Plant Swap - September 28th at dawn

Hello.  This weekend Mother's Cafe & Garden confirmed that we can have the Fall Hancock Native Plant Swap in their parking lot.

The swap will be from from dawn to 9:30am.

Bring native plants (please mark them with name and any helpful information).
Take home the same number of other people's plants.

This is the fourth swap and people from all over Austin are turning out.  
There is great participation from Central and North Central neighborhoods.
We also always find one or more new gardeners who we are able to set up with native plants.

If you have some native plants that are doing very well in your yard and reproducing everywhere, we need those plants at the swap. 
Please bring as many as you possibly can.  We can come help you get them into pots!

IMPORTANT WAYS YOU CAN HELP:

  • Be a Donor:  Contact me if you want to help the cause for native plants but have something else to do the day of the swap.  We can come to your house with all the supplies and very carefully pot up the
    plants you want to share with others.
  • Be a Digger: Volunteer to be available to dig up donor plants in your neighborhood.
  • Be a Promoter: Distribute flyers in your neighborhood to gardens that have lovely plants you'd like to see in other yards (flyers provided).

Get your baby natives ready!  

The swap is most successful when a lot of people participate, please tell your friends, family, acquaintances, and strangers about it!

Reminder: Parks and Recreation Board Meeting Tuesday, August 27th at 6 PM

The Parks and Recreation Board will hold a meeting this evening, Tuesday, August 27th at 6 PM in the Boards and Commissions Room of City Hall. Here is the agenda. The first item on the non-consent portion of the agenda is a presentation by Jim D. Huddleston proposing the redevelopment of Hancock Golf Course. The board asked PARD staff to put the item on this month's agenda to ensure that the proposal is discussed in a public forum and so that the board can take an official position on the matter. Please attend to register your opposition to Mr. Huddleston's proposal. You can also write the Parks and Recreation Board members to provide input.

Austin Water Staging Area

"Renewing Austin" is a five-year program to upgrade aging water lines and to keep pace with the infrastructure demands of a growing city. We are currently replacing waterlines in several areas north of the University of Texas. Working in the dense central city area is always a challenge. I wanted to make you aware that we are planning to use the area bordered by East 38th ½ East 38th and Red River Streets as a staging area. This area is owned by the City of Austin. I would be happy to meet with your board if you have any questions regarding the use of this space.

We will be presenting this issue of using a portion of this triangle of land for a construction staging area to the Parks and Recreation Board this coming Tuesday, August 27th. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the Boards and Commission Room at City Hall. At that time, we will request official approval for use of the space. If allowed, the space would be used for about 1 year and would take up a similar footprint as the last staging area. We will be paying the Parks department approximately $40,000 in mitigation fees for the area. Parks determines if the money will be used at the site, or in other areas. They often take the direction of the neighborhood association on how they will use this money.

I encourage you to come to this meeting and voice any concerns you may have over us working the area. I have attached the maps that will be presented at the meeting.

Board of Adjustment Hearing Re. Harris Avenue Duplexes Monday, May 13 at 5:30pm

There is a Board of Adjustment hearing about proposed dorm duplexes at 718, 720 and 722 Harris Avenue on Monday, May 13 at 5:30 to consider an appeal filed for an interpretation that the zoning code permits only one building to be constructed on that site -- not three. Residents of Central and North Central Austin are urged to attend, and show support; and to also let the City Manager, City Attorney and City officials know we want the duplex occupancy limits lowered. The hearing will be held at City Council Chambers.

Perry Estate Sound Simulation Thursday, January 17 at 5:30 PM

The Perry Estate has been granted a 24 hour permit for their planned sound test. The test will occur tomorrow, Thursday, January 17th, at 5:30 and will run for 30 minutes.

April 13, 2013 Longhorn Run Map - This Race Will Encircle HNA

The 2013 Longhorn Run will affect the Hancock Neighborhood. The event, which includes a 10K and 2-mile race, will take place on Saturday, April 13. The race is organized by UT Student Government and RecSports and serves as a fundraiser for both departments. The race began in 2010, took a hiatus in 2011 and returned in 2012 with 2200 runners. The 2013 route has been altered due to feedback from last year's event and will now affect residents of Hancock Neighborhood. Please see the attached a map for your reference.

We will have only partial road closures and we have a rolling open for streets. APD was great in working with residents last year to minimize the inconvenience, while ensuring a safe environment for the runners. We would expect the same would happen this year; APD will assist in making sure that residents can get to/from their destination with minimal disruption. Notification letters were mailed on Jan 10, per city requirements and approval.
